20 Great Movie Franchises That Became Unwatchable
6. Jaws
These days, you can all but guarantee that any film that sees success will get a sequel. The industry is obsessed with them, arguably now more so than ever, but this isn't exactly a new phenomenon.
Even a story with as little need for a sequel as Jaws, released all the way back in 1975, was given a follow-up just three years later. Returning to Amity Island for yet another shark attack for Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) to deal with was wildly unimaginative and unnecessary, and began the downfall of a franchise that started out with one of the most influential movies of all time.
By the time Brody's son, Michael (Dennis Quaid), was terrorised by a shark another five years later, things were getting ridiculous. So much so that the fourth outing, Jaws: The Revenge, essentially ignored everything about the previous entry, and yet still managed to somehow kill the legacy of Jaws completely.
Of course, Rotten Tomatoes scores aren't everything, but in this case, it does paint a vivid picture of just how bad the movies got. Michael Caine was at least able to buy his mother a house out of The Revenge, but if this is the main takeaway the star has from a project, then you know it's bad.
