20 Greatest Horror Movies Of The 80s

10. The Fly

Fright Night 1985
20th Century Fox

One of the most prolific - and high brow - horror filmmakers of the 1980s was undoubtedly David Cronenberg, who released no less than five horror movies throughout the decade including the remake of the 1950s classic horror B-movie The Fly.

The original version of The Fly climaxed in a gloriously bad special effect with a human head superimposed on a fly's body, but Cronenberg's version couldn't be further removed from this cheap and somewhat tacky approach to horror. Scientist Seth Brundle (a superb turn from Jeff Goldblum) slowly begins to transform into the titular insect after an experiment with his teleportation device goes wrong, thanks to an unexpected buzzing fellow traveller.

The visual effects in The Fly were at the top of the game in the late 1980s and still hold up today (there's something about practical effects which is especially appropriate for this kind of disgusting body horror). But beyond the gore lies great character development and performances which elevates The Fly well above your average horror film.
