20 Greatest Horror Movies Of The 80s
11. Society
If there's anyone who can be considered as the unsung hero of American horror movies it's Brian Yuzna, and if any horror film of the 1980s falls into the category of criminally underrated it's Yuzna's directorial debut, the bizarre satirical film Society.
In Society, Yuzna sets his sights firmly on the vacuous, preening rich socialites of Beverley Hills, unraveling a story in which a teenager Bill Whitney (Billy Warlock) slowly comes to realise all is not as it seems and his family are involved in some very strange behaviour. It's a slow burner, but patience is a virtue and Society pays off with one of the most twisted and bizarre endings you'll see in any horror film (it is - quite literally - an orgy of special effects).
Society might have divided audiences when it was released (it met with considerably better reception in Europe) but is widely considered to be one of the great horror movies of the decade. The fact that Yuzna wrote the screenplay for Honey, I Shrunk The Kids is almost as bizarre as Screaming Mad George's make-up effects.
