5. Michael Caine - Alfred Pennyworth (The Dark Knight Saga)

Christian Bale may be the star of the Dark Knight saga, but it's Michael Caine who represents the franchise's conscience and warm, beating heart with his unforgettable work as Batman's fiercely loyal confidante-cum-father-figure.

His protective instincts over Bruce are apparent from early on in Batman Begins, layered over with entertaining banter and some superbly-delivered one-liners from the legendary Brit actor ("What's the point of all those push-ups if you can't even lift a bloody log?").

Caine gets easily his most compelling material in The Dark Knight Rises, heartbreakingly pleading with Bruce to reconsider taking on Bane. His tearful breakdwn at Bruce's "grave" during the film's climax is a masterful reminder of the class, levity and dramatic punching power he brings to what's no doubt the definitive interpretation of Batman's kindly butler.
