20 Greatest Sci-Fi Films Of The 21st Century

13. Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim (2013) - Poster It wasn't quite the genre classic that many hoped it would be, but Guillermo Del Toro's epic battle of giant robots and killer alien monsters is still a massively entertaining movie, even if it does feel uncomfortably close to a Transformers knock-off. What Pacific Rim does have over Transformers is the skill of Del Toro, who obviously had a blast bringing the larger than life combatants to the screen. The characters are a bit dull throughout, with most of the actors doing a good job but having a hard time making much out of the uninspired screenplay, generally not becoming more than genre archetypes. If you can overlook the fact that the entire premise is intentionally silly, then Pacific Rim will probably be one of the more purely entertaining films you'll ever see. If not, you can hopefully at least appreciate the astonishing CGI work, helping to create a near-perfectly rendered world inhabited by breathtaking monsters. Even as someone averse to cashgrab sequels, I actually would not mind seeing another Pacific Rim as long as Del Toro sticks around to guide it.

I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
