12. Star Trek Into Darkness

Although essentially Star Trek in name only, JJ Abrams' forays into Gene Roddenberry's universe have resulted in some of the most purely entertaining movies of the decade, combining brilliant special effects, surprisingly realised characters, and adrenaline fueled action scenes. Of course, the best part of Into Darkness is Benedict Cumberbatch's insanely intimidating take on one of Star Trek's greatest villains, Khan Noonien Singh. Although not given much to work with by the writers, Cumberbatch turns in one of the best sci-fi performances of recent years, managing to make a brutal killing machine into a somewhat sympathetic figure. Aside from Cumberbatch, most of the cast gives good performances, albeit some have more to work with than others, but the real star of the movie might just be the CGI crew who make it probably the best looking Trek film ever. Although a little light on interesting narrative and character development outside of Khan, Star Trek Into Darkness is a supremely entertaining, superbly crafted entry into the Star Trek mythology.
