Appears in: Close Encounters of the Third Kind The mothership from this highly influential film was spectacular and wowed audiences when it first came into view. Even if you havent seen the film youll probably be aware of the musical tones that signalled its arrival at the end of the film. Featuring a wide array of speakers and lights, which are apparently used in communication, the ship certainly looks alien. Although you shouldnt have expected anything else from Ralph McQuarrie who in his life worked on Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek and E.T.
15. Valley Forge
Appears in: Silent Running The Valley Forge was essentially a greenhouse orbiting a distant planet. The ship is one of three that holds on board what remains of Earths forests. The ships are another example of model designers wanting to create ships that seem plausible. To that effect many of the aesthetics borrow from NASA designed spacecraft. Obviously holding all that plant life on board requires a good deal of light for photosynthesis. The ship has large domes to allow sunlight enter the ship.
