20 Hidden Drama Movie Gems You Can Watch On Netflix
11. The Woodsman
Another truly difficult watch (though more for what is told than what is shown), The Woodsman sees the under-appreciated Kevin Bacon put in his greatest ever performance, the actor subtle and sparing as Walter, a convicted child molester who must readjust to life after serving a twelve-year prison sentence. Rather than form any distinct judgement about Walter and his desires, director Nicole Kassell, adapting co-writer Steven Fechter's play, instead shows the earnest attempt of a man rebuilding his life, a man who knows he has done wrong and has served his time for doing so. The Woodsman attempts some comment on the nature of paedophilia, but more so than that it is a deeply-felt character study, one which sees Bacon at the height of his powers in a performance deserving of a wider audience.
