10. Capote

The first fiction feature film from Moneyball and Foxcatcher director, Bennett Miller, Capote examines the real-life story behind one of the greatest books ever written, Truman Capote's masterpiece, In Cold Blood (the book which gave birth to the idea of what Capote would call the "non-fiction novel"). Playing the eponymous author is the certified Greatest Actor of His Generation, Philip Seymour Hoffman, on Oscar-winning form in a performance which sees him twist and contort his body to give off the impression that he's as short as the diminutive writer. It's a truly transformative role, with Hoffman not so much imitating Capote as embodying him, living him. Elsewhere there's fine support from the ever-reliable Catherine Keener (Oscar nominated for her turn here as Harper Lee, of To Kill a Mockingbird fame), and the assured, slick, somewhat cold direction we've come to expect from Miller since he burst onto the scene with this film. The standout is always going to be Hoffman, though, the scene where he cries near the end of the picture the peak of a towering performance.
