20 Hidden Drama Movie Gems You Can Watch On Netflix
8. Bad Lieutenant
Not the Werner Herzog remake (reboot, reimagining, whatever it is), but the Abel Ferrara original, surely one of the darkest, grisliest, most morally dubious films to make this list. Steeped in Catholicism, Lieutenant sees Harvey Keitel (in his finest performance) as a corrupt, drunk, gambling cop who investigates the rape of a young nun in a grimy-looking New York City. During his investigation, Keitel (billed only as "The Lieutenant") seeks forgiveness and tries to atone for his sins, to no real avail. Notable for two memorable scenes of debauched depravity - one sees the rape of the nun, the other sees the titular BL masturbating outside of a car while forcing the two young ladies inside to perform sexual acts on each other - Bad Lieutenant received an NC-17 rating upon release, meaning stores like Blockbuster where prohibited from selling or renting the picture. Despite this, the film has become a favourite among directors, with Martin Scorsese, no doubt influenced by the film's ideas of redemptive Catholicism, naming it as on of the best films of the 1990s.
