Chart Position: 12th Worldwide Gross: $542,686,737 If it wasnt weird enough that director Kenneth Branagh - a man best known for Henry V and Hamlet - already has a Thor and a Jack Ryan film to his name, then add to that this, his latest directorial effort, Cinderella, a live-action retelling of the famous fairy tale. Starring Lily James and a Cate Blanchett presumably wanting a break from her more serious fare, Branaghs film is gorgeous to look at and, like most of his films, swaggeringly confident in its execution. Other than that, its all a bit too clean, the film awash with gorgeous makeup and shimmering set-pieces and polished performances but ultimately just going through the standard Cinderella motions. Theres not much daring here, and nowhere near enough of the fun or villainy youd expect from a tale as delightfully weird as the source (also, the digital mice are god damn annoying, not to mention out of place).
