20 Horror Movies From The 21st Century That Didn't Actually Suck
8. Paranormal Activity (2007)
This film continued the horror genre's love affair with found-footage and although it's not particularly original, it is a well-made horror that plays on our fears of what goes bang in the night. The oft-seen set-up sees Katie and Micah move into a new house but the former feels an unearthly presence haunting her.
After a psychic assesses that a demon is haunting her, various cameras are placed around the house to record all activity in a hope to find and stop the burgeoning presence. As the days go on, their lives are slowly destroyed by the demon until, eventually, Katie can no longer control herself and is possessed by the demon and kills her partner.
The film harks back to The Blair Witch Project in that most of the dialogue was improvised and the cast, to that end, appear quite believable. Also, the film was shot in one week and this certainly helps the actors as they are fully enveloped in a terrifying, demonic world. Although the initial impact has been watered down by a series of increasingly weak sequels, this film still holds up and grossed nearly $200million and, to that end, is one of the biggest horrors of the new millennium.
