20 Horror Movies Nobody Expected To Be Good
10. Freaky (2020)
Helmed by Happy Death Day and Heart Eyes director Christopher Landon, Freaky sees a brutish serial killer (Vince Vaughn) swap bodies with high schooler Millie (Kathryn Newton) when she's stabbed by a magical artefact. Despite sounding like an absurd premise, this 2020 horror-comedy proved to be a genuine genre gem.
Although Vaughn is best known for his comedic roles in Wedding Crashers and Dodgeball, his stint in Brawl in Cell Block 99 demonstrated that he can be an imposing presence when needed. The star seamlessly blends each part of his wheelhouse to delightful effect here in Freaky, and Newton likewise does a brilliant job portraying the awkward teenager and menacing murderer, bringing tons of energy and terror to the screen.
As wonderfully funny as Freaky is, it's also a visceral slasher. The opening scene, where Vaughn's Blissfield Butcher mercilessly slaughters a group of partygoers, is a blood-soaked statement of intent for the sort of carnage viewers can expect. A wine bottle, table saw, and meat hook are just some of the items that are put to creatively grisly use throughout the film, with each kill being as satisfyingly gory as the last.
Freaky had no business being as good as it is.
