20 Horror Movies Nobody Expected To Be Good
11. The First Omen (2024)
Richard Donner's 1976 classic The Omen is considered to be one of the most influential horror movies of the 20th century. The story of a couple who inadvertently adopt the antichrist, this landmark work of cinema spawned three sequels and a 2006 remake, none of which reached the same terrifying heights of the original.
The arrival of a new Omen film almost two decades later sparked skepticism among audiences. Not only do horror revivals historically have a poor track record, but The First Omen appeared to be cashing in on a growing trend of Nun-driven movies like The Nun 2, Immaculate, and Sister Death. What viewers weren't expecting was for this to be one of the best horrors of 2024.
Set five years before the events of the original picture, this prequel sees Nell Tiger Free as Margaret, a novice nun in Rome who soon finds herself at the centre of a sinister plot.
Helmed by Arkasha Stevenson in her feature debut, The First Omen is an effectively atmospheric chiller filled with unsettling imagery and nerve-wracking frights. A powerhouse score by Mark Korven that pays tribute to Jerry Goldsmith's Oscar-winning masterpiece is the cherry on top of this phenomenal feature.
