Stephen King is the literary genius behind countless novels and short stories that have been adapted into all-time horror classics, with The Shining, IT, and Carrie being just a small part of his cinematic legacy. Not all of the legendary author's ideas have translated to the screen as successfully, though.

When it was announced that his 1979 novel The Long Walk (published under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) was being adapted, the concept of boys walking didn't sound like it could make for an engaging watch.

Thanks to a combination of unflinching brutality, extraordinary performances, and a chillingly relevant social commentary, The Long Walk turned out to be a sensational film that was lauded by critics and audiences.

Set within a dystopian post-war America, the story follows a group of 50 boys who are selected to participate in the titular event, where whoever walks the furthest is granted a single wish. If they slow down below three miles per hour for too long or step off the road, they're executed on the spot.

Watching the participants trudge through the rain, exhaustion, and fear was gruelling in the best possible way, with Mark Hamill's portrayal of the gravelly-voiced Major making it even better.
