20 Huge Horror Movie Hits NOBODY Expected
17. The Devil Inside
Even though exorcism films are among the most lucrative in horror and the found footage subgenre basically couldn't miss in 2012, The Devil Inside is one of the most baffling horror success stories, well, ever.
The film received near-universal critical scorn, and while plenty of panned horror movies have performed well at the box office, The Devil Inside is a unique case, given that just about everyone seemed to hate it.
The movie's infamous non-ending - which abruptly cuts to a title card inviting the viewer to visit a website for more information - thoroughly pissed off the masses, enough that The Devil Inside landed a brutal "F" CinemaScore from moviegoers. And while CinemaScore is typically a water-tight indication of how well a film will perform with casual audiences, in this case, the polling was totally off, as The Devil Inside still went on to gross a flabbergasting $101.8 million globally.
It's an all-the-more insane number given that the film cost a mere $1 million, and yet the discourse surrounding its ending was so vitriolic that Paramount never bothered producing a sequel.
