The Passion of the Christ, directed by Mel Gibson, is one of the most controversial films of all time due to its high levels of extreme violence and perceived inclusion of non-Biblical material. The films details the last twelve hours of Jesus' life and was a major hit, earning over $600m at the box-office, but divided critics. The film was handled by an independent distributor and does many things that an independent film would do, including being filmed in a foreign language.
