8. "You Don't Want The Bumpers. Life Doesn't Give You Bumpers." - Boyhood
The best inspirational movie quote of the year comes from Richard Linklater's masterpiece Boyhood. Get rid of the 12-year filming "gimmick" and boil the movie down to its characters, its actors and its dialogue, and you've still got an incredible movie worthy of awards across the board. Though there are more dramatically worthy scenes in the movie (such as Patricia Arquette's fantastic, "I thought there would be more" confession at the end), the most memorable maxim occurs as Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and Samantha's (Lorelei Linklater) father Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke) is taking them bowling. Mason Jr. bowls a gutter ball and tells his dad, "I wish I could use the bumpers", to which he replies with the iconic quote that's pretty much impossible to forget. As well as reflecting the nature of existence, the quote can't help but reflect the massive riskiness of Linklater's project itself.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
