In Romero’s original Night of the Living Dead, Barbra was initially supposed to be a much stronger character and the sole survivor of the movie but the director was reportedly so taken with Judith O’Dea’s petrified performance that he adjusted the script accordingly.

His original vision for Barbra came to fruition in the 1990 remake directed by Tom Savini and written by Romero.

Similarly, some elements of Romero’s original idea for his second sequel Day of the Dead – an aboveground stronghold surrounded by electric fences and an army of trained zombies – morphed into its 2005 follow-up Land of the Dead.
