Practical Magic was neither a critical nor commercial success at the time of its original 1998 release, with many being bewildered by its mish-mash of tones and genres, but over time it endured as a cult fave thanks to the blistering chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
It's sustained enough in the zeitgeist, in fact, that a sequel has been filmed with Bullock, Kidman, and co-stars Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, all returning, alongside new cast members Joey King, Maisie Williams, Lee Pace, and Xolo Maridueña.
The story reunites us with the Owens family 25 years later as they reckon with a startling discovery about the origins of their magic, as uncovered by Sally's (Bullock) daughter (King), who also manifests her own dark powers. This sends the family on a quest from Boston to the UK to confront their past.
We can only hope that this sequel will be as playfully, at times puzzlingly strange, as its predecessor. Otherwise, what are we even doing here?
