20 Most Controversial Video Nasties

16. The Burning (1981)

the burning Cropsy is the caretaker at a summer camp for kids. He is a figure of fun and the kids play a cruel trick on him in which he gets accidentally set on fire and is thus badly disfigured. He is in the Hospital for five years and gets released - upon which he dons a disguise and murders a prostitute in a rage. He heads to a camp where there are a bunch of useless teens and wouldn't you know - he starts slaughtering them etc. etc. A blatant attempt to get on the slasher movie band wagon, The Burning is an adequate slasher with special effects by Tom Savini and a groovy score by Rick Wakeman. The murder scenes and gore hit the sweet spot if you are that way inclined. it's not a bad little film for what it is. Prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act in the early 1980s, the intrepid Vipco submitted it for reclassification and got away with the film missing about 30 seconds of gore effects. By 2001, all cuts were waived. Controversial because: the raft murder spree sequence and the shots at the beginning of the film showing scissors piercing a woman's flesh.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
