17. House (1977)
The Plot: A group of seven young Japanese girls decide to spend the summer at one of their aunt's country homes, though eventually come to realise that the house is "alive" and hell-bent on consuming them one by one. Why It's Disturbing: Truly one of the weirdest and most unsettling films ever made, House compensates for its low-budget construction with extreme imagination, refusing to settle for simple gory deaths, instead employing wildly over-the-top, surreal visuals to alternately hilarious and horrifying effect. Scenes such as a character's disembodied head floating around the screen in pursuit of another character and one girl being eaten by a piano are practically impossible to forget, along with possibly the creepiest cat in cinema history. For many other movies, this sheer amount of goofiness would massively detract from the WTF factor, but given that practically every frame in House bleeds with unexpected trippy flourishes, it's tough not to be hugely unsettled.
