20 Most Exciting Movies Announced In 2017
15. Top Gun: Maverick
Release Date: July 12, 2019
A Top Gun sequel has been discussed for years and years, though those plans hit a snag with the untimely death of original director Tony Scott in 2012.
However, it was confirmed earlier this year that the follow-up, Top Gun: Maverick, will start shooting next year for a summer 2019 release. Scott's replacement will be Tron: Legacy's Joseph Kosinski, a rock solid choice for what's likely to be an unapologetic style-over-substance romp, with original composer Harold Faltermeyer even returning to provide the musical score.
Though the original is a classic action film in its own right, it's hardly Shakespeare, so there's very little possibility of this sequel undermining or "ruining" the first one in any way. At worst, it'll be dumb schlock, which is probably what most fans want it to be anyway.
We all know Cruise still looks like a million bucks and is fiercely committed to putting himself in harm's way as much as possible, so it should be a breezy blockbuster blast.
