20 Most Groundbreaking Horror Movies Of All Time

4. Scream (1996)

What's it about? Liev Schreiber, Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox star in Scream as residents of the sleepy town of Woodsboro who find themselves caught up in a series of murders by a mysterious serial killer wearing a ghost-faced mask. Based in part on the real life Gainseville Ripper, it's a deadly game of cat and mouse between the hunter and his prey. What makes it groundbreaking? Largely credited with revitalizing the horror genre in the 1990s, Wes Craven's Scream can also be credited for delivering the first in a long line of postmodern, self-aware horror movies which can be seen to have reached a zenith with the recent Cabin in the Woods. Featuring characters who reference other horror movies and playfully subverting many genre tropes, it's also pretty funny, particularly for fans of slasher movies eagle-eyed enough to spot the many references and in-jokes.
