20 Most Hotly Anticipated Movies Of Summer 2019 - Ranked
17. The Kitchen
Release Date: August 9
Billed As: Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss star as the wives of Irish mobsters who continue to work their husbands’ crime operations after the men are arrested by the FBI in 1970s New York.
Hype: Although the release isn't too far away, The Kitchen still doesn’t have a trailer. However, a female-driven crime drama is a pretty solid premise. Think The Widows but set in the 70s.
It’s the cast that mainly drives up the hype for this one. McCarthy’s comedy roles are very hit and miss, but she proved herself as a worthy actress in the Oscar-nominated Can You Ever Forgive Me? – a role she herself received a Best Actress nomination for. Her character in The Kitchen is a devoted mother of two who is at first reluctant to enter to the world of crime.
Haddish is also normally associated with comedy, but will portray an outsider in the Irish community who seeks independence after her husband’s prison sentence means he can no longer protect her.
Moss has reached critical acclaim in The Handmaid’s Tale, but she further proved her strengths as an actress in Us (2019) and Her Smell (2018). Whilst she portrays a timid wife with an abusive husband, her character soon begins to fall in love with the violence of her new criminal lifestyle. This will hopefully allow Moss to continue to shine.
