20 Most Iconic Movie Deaths Of All Time
16. Colonel Kurtz - Apocalypse Now (1979)
One of the most tortured productions in history, Apocalypse Now was massively over-budget and over-schedule, yet Francis Ford Coppola still managed to make one of the greatest movies of all time. Even though he turned up for the shoot so overweight that he had to be hidden in the shadows, Marlon Brando still gives a great performance, and gets one of cinema's most epic death scenes to boot.
An almost mythical figure by the end of the narrative, Martin Sheen's machete-armed Willard sneaks up on Kurtz as he makes a recording, letting all of his frustrations out as he hacks away at his former captor. Inter-cut with the brutal slaughter of a water buffalo by the natives, Willard leaves as Kurtz utters with his dying breaths 'the horror... the horror...', words which echo ominously as the movie fades to black.
