7. The Cabin In The Woods (2012)

The Shining Jack Nicholson
Lionsgate

The Cabin in the Woods is a mixed bag because it demonsrates many interesting concepts but is also hindered by its several ideas because they become overwhelming and cause the storyline to be somewhat fragmented. Either way, it merits at least one re-watch to understand such a dynamic plot. It’s just so entertaining from start to finish.

The set-up is brilliant – five friends go for a break at a remote cabin, unbeknown to them they’re lives are now in manipulation of scientists. There is a little element of everything – dark comedy, jump scares, monsters, detailed setting and a more than welcome suprise appearance from Sigourney Weaver.

The film lacks a bit of refinement, with clunky script issues and jarring changes in genre, but The Cabin in the Woods doesn’t deserve to be lumped in the ‘so bad, it’s good’ category because it presents a genuinely intricate story which takes time to fully comprehend.
