20 Most Rewatchable Horror Movies Of All Time

2. The Shining (1980)

The Shining Jack Nicholson
Warner Bros

As a film that’s garnered a huge fanbase over the past few decades and is now considered one of the greatest horror movies of all time, it’s hard to believe The Shining was not well received upon its first release. Author Stephen King detested the adaptation, there were very mixed reviews by critics, Shelly Duvall was traumatised from working on the picture and Stanley Kubrick was Razzie nominated for Worst Director.

But now, it gets the recognition it deserves. There is so many iconic visuals to be found in the film which have now become signature movie shots – the blood elevator, the Grady Twins and of course the famous “Here’s Johnny!”, which was improvised by Jack Nicholson himself.

And this is easily one of Nicholson’s best performances. He immerses himself into the murderous psychopath persona, conveyed with a great intensity and a bit of dark humour which leaves you on edge throughout the entire flick.

Time has been kind to The Shining – the cinematography is impeccable, the atmosphere is evocatively chilling and it is arguably the greatest works of Stanley Kubrick.
