The Film

David Cronenberg's masterful 1986 sci-fi horror film is one of the director's best works and one of the greatest remakes of all time (being adapted from the 1958 Kurt Neumann film).

After a stalled effort to get another remake made in the early 2000s, it was confirmed last year that Fox is prepping a new The Fly remake with on-the-rise director J.D. Dillard (Sleight) set to helm.

Is It A Good Idea?

Trying to compete with the Cronenberg movie, especially its grotesque practical effects and Jeff Goldblum's stunning performance, would be incredibly foolish, so this can only really work if it's a spiritual remake that basically reboots the property by going in a whole new direction.

Body horror is such an underserved genre that there's definitely an enthusiasm to see more of it, but the film's destined to be endlessly compared to a predecessor it will almost certainly struggle to top.

The 1986 movie has aged superbly so this isn't really needed - and contemporary CGI will never match those practical effects - but seeing a stripped-down, grimy retelling for the modern age could at least be somewhat interesting.
