The Film

1986 family sci-fi comedy Short Circuit is an indelible 80s classic that made a screen icon out of robot Johnny 5, yet after the tepid Short Circuit 2 was released in 1988, the series quickly died a death.

Word of a remake has been doing the rounds for over a decade, and director Tim Hill (Muppets from Space, Alvin and the Chipmunks) has been attached to helm since 2012, though it seems that TriStar's waiting for the right time to reintroduce Johnny 5 to audiences.

Is It A Good Idea?

Fun though the original is, it's not exactly a masterpiece, even though some might claim this planned remake will "ruin their childhood."

It'll be interesting to see how Johnny 5's design is updated for the present, and Hill has promised a darker, less goofy story...which could result in a refreshingly gritty update or a total disaster.

There's no need for it, but at the same time, there are far more offensive things to remake.
