The Film

1997's slasher flick I Know What You Did Last Summer was a box office smash despite miserable reviews, leading to two sequels (the latter of which went straight-to-video in 2006).

In September 2014, Sony announced plans for a remake, with horror maestro Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Hush, Gerald's Game) due to write alongside partner Jeff Howard.

Flanagan also confirmed that their take on the IP would deviate from both Lois Duncan's 1973 novel and the original movie, while Sony apparently considers the remake a top priority.

Is It A Good Idea?

With Flanagan's involvement, there's a strong possibility this'll end up superior to the original movie (especially if he ends up directing).

The 1997 film is such a disappointingly simple slasher homage - trashy fun though it is - that there's clear potential for a new take to dial up the camp, homage and self-awareness.

The title is a brand that's recognisable and easily marketable to a new generation, and it could actually end up pretty decent to boot. It's easy to see why Sony wants to jump on this fast.
