20 Movie Sequels That Start Immediately After The First
Some sequels are just a continuation of the first.
It's fair to say that the vast majority of movie sequels are set at least a little while after the original, in turn allowing the heroes to enjoy their victory for a minute before that happy ending is inevitably unpicked.
But not all sequels are created equal, and in some cases, it absolutely makes sense for the next film to take place hours, minutes, perhaps even seconds after the first film rolled credits.
After all, some stories just provide a natural in for the next chapter, so why create any distance from it when it's basically already announced itself?
And that's ultimately true of these 20 movie sequels, each of which kicked off near-immediately after the conclusion of their predecessor, no matter if they released a short while later or perhaps only after a lengthy gestation period.
Regardless of how these sequels turned out overall, and whether it was ultimately the right storytelling choice, they all hit the ground running by picking up the story threads left hanging from the original movie, once it was clear to studios that audiences had an appetite for more...
20. Back to the Future Part II
Let's kick this list off with one of the all-time greatest examples of this trope - Back to the Future.
After Marty (Michael J. Fox) returns to 1985 at the end of the first film and all seems to be well, he and his girlfriend Jennifer (Claudia Wells) are suddenly met by Doc (Christopher Lloyd), who insists that they return with him to the future in order to save their children from woeful fates.
Back to the Future Part II then continues from the very moment that the trio get in the DeLorean and fly away - well, almost.
Part II actually opens by repeating the final scene of the first film, but because actress Claudia Wells was unable to reprise her role of Jennifer in the sequel, the scene was actually reshot with new actress Elisabeth Shue, albeit done so seamlessly that many likely never noticed.
Back to the Future Part III also picked up straight after the end of Part II's cliffhanger, ensuring that the entire trilogy takes place over a period of just a couple of weeks.
