20 Movie Sequels That Start Immediately After The First
7. Beneath the Planet of the Apes
1968's Planet of the Apes boasts one of the most iconic and unforgettable twist endings of all time - a tough act for a sequel to follow if there ever was one.
In the final scene, protagonist George Taylor (Charlton Heston) and Nova (Linda Harrison) ride along the shoreline on horseback, before they discover the ruins of the Statue of Liberty, revealing that this apparently alien, ape-ruled world is actually a post-apocalyptic Earth destroyed by nuclear war.
Taylor famously falls to his knees and curses humanity for annihilating their own planet through war, and 1970s follow-up Beneath the Planet of the Apes continues from basically this very moment.
After revisiting the previous film's ending - even though it's basically impossible to forget what happened - we reconvene with a more-composed Taylor as he and Nova continue their journey across the Forbidden Zone in search of a new place to settle.
The original film's final reveal is such a jaw-dropping game-changer that, honestly, there was little option but to pick up from precisely that point.
