20 Perfect Scenes In God-Awful Horror Movies

2. The Citywide Suicide - The Happening

The Happening
Fox

Ah, The Happening. What was marketed as a chilling thriller about an unseen force driving people to suicide quickly devolves into an unintentionally hilarious mess of wooden performances, childlike dialogue, and people running away from the wind.

But based on how M. Night Shyamalan's blunder starts, you'd swear you were watching a classic in the making. The first scene takes place in New York City, with the locals going about their daily routines. Suddenly, most of the people freeze in mid-action, as if in a trance. Without warning, a woman on a bench pulls outs a hairpin and nonchalantly impales her neck with it.

Nearby, a bunch of construction workers are joking around when one of them plummets off the building. As the foreman looks up, he realises his co-workers aren't just falling but willingly leaping to their demise. Unable to comprehend what's happening, all the foreman can do is stare in unimaginable terror.

Anyone watching this WTF sequence for the first time probably assumed The Happening's negative reviews were unjust.

But after watching the rest of the movie, it becomes apparent this scene was the only part worth watching.
