15. Zombies
I just felt our flesh munching friends deserved an entry of their own because of the awesomeness they bring to the horror genre. Zombies are horror's chief bad boys and have been so since George Romero's 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead. The amount of zombie films that have been spawned since then has been outrageous - plus if we look at gaming and the massive popularity of the Resident Evil franchise (which in turn spawned a popular franchise of Resident Evil Movies). And also television with the popularity of The Walking Dead. Zombies represent the ultimate monster because it exists within us. If we die, we become the monster (unless you are sensible enough to put a bullet through your head prior to dying). The apocalypse is nigh. Zombies outnumber us by 200,000 to 1. We are screwed. Film makers have dealt with this scenario by ultraviolence, political satire, outright humour, nihilism, a message of hope. We have a rich treasure trove of awesome Zombie movies to be both scared and proud of. The individual approach directors take to the subject just highlights how brilliantly versatile the horror genre is.
