20 Recent Casting Choices NOBODY Expected

The world was positively gobsmacked when, at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

While many expected Downey to return in Secret Wars as a Tony Stark variant for the sake of fan service, bringing him back to play the Big Bad of the Multiverse Saga is a twist just about nobody could've predicted.

That said, there are still huge questions about the precise nature of Downey's role. Is he genuinely just playing a Doctor Doom who resembles Tony Stark for some reason?

Considering how odd that would be, many have theorised that this version of Doom will be a Tony Stark variant who may well use his likeness to manipulate the Avengers.

It's certainly a bold and controversial choice, many feeling that it evokes an air of desperation on Marvel's part, especially with the many great actors who would knock Doom out of the park. 

Fingers crossed that this is more than just a cheap nostalgia grab.
