13. The Giant Assault Rifle - Weapons
One of the most bizarre and unforgettable moments in Zach Cregger's Weapons - and gee, there are enough of them - is the dream sequence where Archer (Josh Brolin) sees his missing son Matthew (Luke Speakman) run away and into a house.
After a beat, a gigantic assault rifle materialises above the house with "2:17" emblazoned on it - the very same time that the missing children all left their houses and vanished into the night.
It's an extremely strange moment and one that Cregger has refused to explain in press interviews.
Some might interpret it as a rather heavy-handed nod towards the epidemic of school shootings in the United States, while it could simply be a visualisation of the fact that the missing children being enchanted by witch Gladys (Amy Madigan) can be quite literally used as weapons.
Either way, it's a visual that's both incredibly striking and profoundly odd - jarring in the moment but less so once the film has had time to sink in.
