20 Recent Horror Movies WAY Better Than Expected

Joseph Kahn (Detention, Bodied) is certainly one of the most unique filmmakers working today, and so there should've been plenty of excitement about his new horror film Ick.

However, it ended up spending the better part of a year lingering in post-festival purgatory after premiering at TIFF 2024, ultimately getting such a meagre theatrical release that its box office takings haven't even been publicly disclosed.

All in all it suggested a film that was being buried out of embarrassment, but in fact Ick was actually a gleefully nostalgic creature feature in the vein of Robert Rodriguez's The Faculty.

Stylishly directed and playfully co-written by Kahn, this horror-comedy is a shameless love letter to the early aughts that's sure to strike a chord with so many millennials, elevated by the deliciously self-aware casting of Brandon Routh in the lead role - who, we must add, has rarely been better.

If there's any justice in the world, Ick will become a cult classic in the years to come.
