Though video games are now finally getting the respectful treatment they deserve on the big screen, was there any reason to believe that an adaptation of 2023's indie horror game The Exit 8 would actually work?

After all, the game is more-or-less a walking simulator, as players traipse through a Japanese metro station and try to find "anomalies" in the station's layout while seeking the exit.

The game lasts for all of about 45 minutes, so it was tough to imagine how it could possibly be adapted into a feature film.

But writer-director Genki Kawamura actually did a stellar job of not only bottling the style and vibes of the game, but expanding the source material with a more emotional, character-driven approach.

As a result Exit 8 currently sits among the best-reviewed video game adaptations of all time - an astonishing achievement for a film that could've so easily fallen totally flat and vanished without a trace.
