Of all the things Yorgos Lanthimos could've chosen to make next, who could've possibly predicted it to be a remake of a relatively obscure 2003 South Korean sci-fi black comedy?

Bugonia is a remake of Jang Joon-hwan's cult gem Save the Green Planet!, and while few were actively jonesing for anyone to give the film an English language do-over, it was tough not to be intrigued with Lanthimos at the helm.

Throw Lanthimos regulars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons into the mix and you've got one hell of a stew cooking.

The result is a film that stays true to the core of the original but also brings plenty to unique to the table in terms of a Western perspective, Lanthimos' generally unmistakable approach to dark comedy, two of the best actors working today, and of course a substantially larger budget.

They're both excellent films, and in the very least nobody will accuse Bugonia of being another slop-bucket remake of an acclaimed international film made solely to exploit the story for another audience.
