17. Smurfs
After releasing two Smurfs movies which fused animation and live-action, Hollywood put out the fully animated Smurfs: The Lost Village in 2017 - each of these films proving commercially successful while being largely panned by critics.
The franchise then laid dormant until this year, when Paramount tried again with another hybrid of animation and live-action simply called Smurfs.
Yes, it's technically more of a reboot than a remake, but considering it once again sees the Smurfs running riot throughout Paris - as previously depicted in The Smurfs 2 - it can't help but feel incredibly familiar.
Obviously, The Smurfs are a globally recognisable and highly lucrative brand, so there wasn't much likelihood of Paramount doing nothing with it, but something more inspired than a warmed-over retread would've been nice.
Is this movie making the world a worse place? Absolutely not, but it's just such a blandly soulless example of how perfunctorily a studio can keep milking a prized IP.
