19. Argylle - Elly Is A Former Spy

Argylle contained two huge rug-pulls. There was one in the middle that was surprisingly great, but the later one was considerably less successful, mainly because so many audience members guessed it in advance.

The set-up to Argylle is this: a spy novelist named Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) is pursued by villainous agents as every book she's been writing mysteriously mirrors real-world events. It wasn't an especially original or intriguing premise, which goes a long way toward explaining why this was such a disastrous box-office bomb, but a more original solution to the mystery would've gone a long way in elevating the film.

Alas, it wasn't to be. Eventually, it turns out that yes, Elly is indeed a former spy with amnesia and yes, she'd been writing her own repressed memories down without knowing it. This was more or less the most predictable route the story could've gone down and it was one of the many huge problems with this terrible spy comedy, a film so inane it makes Kingsman: The Golden Circle look like Kick-Ass.
