14. Speak No Evil - The Hollywoodized Ending
2022's Speak No Evil was a terrific horror-thriller, albeit an extremely nasty and bleak one. So brutal was it that several actors turned down the script. As soon as an American remake was announced, it seemed inevitable that the story would be given a happy ending, with the unrestrained cruelty of the original version being the kind of thing that'd terrify studio executives. Sure enough, despite fans everywhere crossing their fingers and hoping against hope, that's just what happened.
This time around, the family of guests escape their murderous hosts and even rescue the kidnapped boy the killers had been forcing to pose as their son. As such, the movie completely missed the point of the story - the original was designed as a satire of excessive politeness, as the guests' reluctance to offend their hosts get them killed.
Instead of an ending that actually pays off the story's themes and character development, we get a bog-standard shoot-em-up finale in which the good guys live and the bad guys die. It was a frustrating end, especially as the rest of the remake was legitimately very good, against the odds. If it had just stuck the landing better, this would've been among the strongest horror remakes to date.
