13. The Fall Guy - The Mystery's Solution

The Fall Guy was a massive box-office flop, and one of the key reasons for this - alongside the fact that it wasn't very good at all - is that the marketing was so vague about what the movie really was. Though it looked like a more generic mix of action and romantic-comedy, it was actually more of a murder-mystery set in the world of Hollywood productions, which was a more interesting narrative direction.

Too bad they didn't pull this off better.

In The Fall Guy, former stuntman Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) finds himself on the set of his former girlfriend's (Emily Blunt) directional debut, and he discovers that lead star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is missing. The film's producer, Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham) enlists Colt to find Tom before the already over-budget film gets cancelled.

While searching for Ryder, Colt finds a dead body in Ryder's hotel room and it eventually turns out that this was Ryder's new stunt double. Ryder had accidentally killed him while intoxicated and he's hiding out while Gail is trying to frame Colt for the crime, explaining why she brought him onto set.

On paper, this is an absolutely solid plot but it just didn't come together in the end, with the execution of the mystery plot feeling half-hearted at best, so it was difficult to become invested in what was going on. This is one film that sorely needed a better script.
