20 Recent Movies That Deserve A Sequel

Stigma be damned, some films deserve a sequel.

Arguably these days more than ever before, there is a stigma attached to movie sequels. Often put in the same category as unoriginal remakes and reboots, it's not exactly unheard of for a follow-up to be used as a soulless cash grab on a popular property.

Then of course there are legacy sequels, of which there have been countless made over the last 10 or so year, and you could count the good ones on one hand. Not every good film needs to receive a continuation, as some work perfectly well as a standalone effort.

However, that is not always the case, and stigma or not, some films recently released deserve a second (or third, fourth, or fifth) chapter.

As said before, there are outstanding recent movies that do not need and would not benefit from a sequel - as well as those where a sequel has already been announced - that will not be featured on this list. However, the ones that do, from reinvigorated franchises, billion-dollar animation successes, and even some that deserve a second chance after missing the mark, could see great sequels made.

Some of these are almost certain to be made, while others may not ever see the light of day, but all deserve another go around.

20. Transformers One

Since Michael Bay's Transformers in 2007, the franchise's style over substance ethos has grown very tired, and even though a couple of films have crossed the billion-dollar mark, there hasn't been a huge amount of interest in the property for some time now.

This was unfortunate for Transformers One, as it is easily the best film the series has put out, and yet nobody went to see it. You can hardly blame people for giving up on Transformers on the whole, but those who passed on the animated movie did ultimately miss out.

Able to boast a stacked cast, with a fun animation style, and a story based on Cybertron rather than Earth, this was a genuinely great outing with huge scope for further exploration. This was just the beginning of the story, and while Cybertron-heads may be hoping for Transfomers Two, the commercial performance of the first animated film has likely put a stop to this kind of thinking at Paramount.

Pulling in just $129 million, the lowest box office gross of any Transformers outing since Michael Bay's reinvention in 2007, Paramount Animation isn't looking at this as a path to continue its franchise, and that is a damn shame.
