Evil Dead Burn boasted arguably the most unique and inspired setup in the franchise so far, revolving around a grieving family who find themselves turned against one another by the Deadites.

That's certainly a premise that invites a whole ton of cruel, nasty potential, and yet there's a strangely pedestrian, by-the-numbers feel to this one, which largely just goes through the motions of what's expected from an Evil Dead movie without bringing much fresh to the table.

Sébastien Vaniček's chaotic direction is also frustratingly edited at times, the third act is an overly CGI-soaked mess, and the frustratingly cynical post-credits scene reeks of a desperate attempt to create a connective tissue between these apparently standalone installments.

With a more disciplined focus on a fraught family being torn apart at the seams, this could've been the most boldly mean entry in the series yet, rather than the first that honestly turned out somewhat forgettable.
