1. Mountainhead
Mountainhead is a new black comedy satire from Succession's Jesse Armstrong, and compellingly follows four billionaire tech-bros who convene at a remote mountain retreat while global chaos erupts due to AI-generated misinformation flooding social media.
It's a killer, undeniably timely concept out of which to construct a savage "eat the rich" satire and meditation on what our AI-saturated future looks like, but Armstrong's film ends up coming off strangely stale and toothless for the most part.
Despite solid performances from the central quartet - Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef - Mountainhead doesn't have much interesting or even basically amusing to say, substituting smugly verbose dialogue in place of, well, actual wit.
Though satirising reality is becoming increasingly challenging due to how absurd our present actually is, it really felt like Armstrong just dumped his not-quite-good-enough Succession leftovers on the plate and dared to call it a meal.
