20 Sci-Fi Movies EVERY Film Fan Should Have Seen

17. Inception

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
Warner Bros.

The vast majority of films on this list are from a long-forgotten era that left us with more original ideas than the modern age could seemingly dream of, but every once in a while, modernity surprised us with something a little bit different. In this case, that different was Inception.

Directed by the incomparable Christopher Nolan, Inception is a mind-bending noir action thriller set in a not-too-distant future in which people have the ability to - kid you not - infiltrate the minds of other people and ultimately steal their ideas. And when professional thief Leonardo DiCaprio is given the chance to have his criminal history erased by pulling off one last subconscious escapade, he can't help but get drawn into the mind-bending madness - and neither can we.

A clever, thought-provoking film that succeeds on every level, Inception takes innovation to the next level, using everything at its disposal to subvert expectations in the most stylish of ways.

The combination of Nolan and the all-star ensemble cast is enough to make anyone want to watch this one, but the intricate plotting, original ideas and overall ambitiousness of the project in its attempts to reinvent some of sci-fi's renowned conventions make it an absolute must-watch for fans of the genre - perhaps the most innovative piece it has produced in a very long time.
