Clarence Williams III was part of a musical dynasty, as both his father and grandfather were professional musicians. He, however, quite accidentally ended up in acting, after walking onto a stage underneath a Harlem YMCA, not realizing what he had done. While Trekkies may not immediately recognize him out of make-up, he played the leader of the Jem'hadar faction that fought alongside Starfleet in To The Death.

His career spanned forty years, with him finding success on The Mod Squad, the police procedural. He also starred in Twin Peaks, along with many other television series along the way. He had a recurring role of Philby Cross on the Hallmark Channel's Mystery Woman series, appearing in all but the first of the films, alongside co-star Kellie Martin.

He played Prince's troubled father in Purple Rain, and continued to act up until 2018, when he had a role in American Nightmares. He passed away on June 4, 2021, at 81 years of age.
