20 Summer 2018 Films You Aren't Excited About (But Should Be)
18. On Chesil Beach
An adaptation of Ian McEwen's Booker Prize nominated 2007 novella (and written for the screen by McEwen himself), this drama from first-time director Dominic Cooke centres on the troubles of a young married couple, played by Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle.
It's doubtful to be a barrel of laughs - McEwen's works never are - but two-time Oscar nominee and recent Golden Globe winner Ronan is well established as a talent worth watching. On Chesil Beach premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2017, where it met a mostly positive critical response (60% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at present).
Release: 15 June.
